CN Captioning Code Lyoko? Cool.

Postby FormicaArchonis » Mon Jan 02, 2006 11:33 pm

I don't know if any of my fellow posters can use this, but you never know. I noticed today that, along with the change in airtime of the Miguzi block, there's been a change to Code Lyoko. It was closed-captioned, and I presume future ones will be as well. I'd like to mention some things of interest that I saw, in no particular order. (BTW, the episode was "Vertigo".)

1) The opening song was, at points, lyrically mangled. Color me unsurprised.

2) References for character names were likely provided to the captioner. Not only were "Aelita" and "Ulrich" spelled right, but "Jeremie" and "X.A.N.A." were used rather than various soundalikes.

3) References for everything else wasn't provided.
3a) Both the Overbike and the Overwing were called the Overbike (no idea if this error was one-off or not).
3b) That holographic sphere that pops up next to Jeremie when Sector 5 is accessed was not called a holosphere system, but a Hollister system. (Strange. I've seen captioners render a proper name as soundalike nouns, but not the other way around.)
3c) Jeremie's "Virtualization!" line was rendered as "[Indistinct.]" Funny, I heard it pretty clearly. Of course, I was expecting it.
3d) And they didn't even try with the Scyphozoa, instead leaving the placeholder "XXX" in its place. Tsk tsk. I'd rather a mistake to that. It just looks unprofessional.
3d, redux) However, the unintentional innuendo formed by Aelita 'saying' "No XXX in sight, Jeremie." did bring a moment of hilarity to the proceedings. And, in interests of keeping things G-rated, that's all I'm going to say about that. :)

So, um, big points for the attempt, but needs some work. And I pity the poor person who tries to use them as a spelling guide.

rofl!!! omg! I find that absoulutely hilarious. A Hollister system!! :*D I am so making a picture about that. That was just awesome. Great job on spotting those, by the way. Usually they don't try and caption stuff that they got elsewhere.. never expected them to do CL. And I'm glad they spelled Jeremie correctly! I hate it that they Americanized it to Jeremy after S1.

Well what is so wrong with that? They spelled it the right way in American. Which is Jeremy, and in French Jeremie. so what?

I was pleasntly suprised yesterday when the captions were added, I like using them, exspelly for theme songs like CL's. I think that quote is funny, cant wait to see it.

I have seen terrible captions before, try watching "The Price is Right" gameshow with the captions on!

Haha. I didn't get to watch it, and if I had, I doubt it would have had captions. I watched like five minutes, and they didn't have captions. the "XXX" thing is so funny. Wow. You'd have thought they would have put it in the way it's supposed to be. Also, how hard would it have been for them to write, "Virtualization"? Not very. That's hilarious.

I saw it today with captions. When they said "Scyphozoa" there was someting like [Undescribed] placed there instead. They only said it once, so I only got to see it once.

I actually caught it at my favourite restaraunt, Mary-Annes, and I'm screaming at the lady 'NO NO LEAVE IT THERE! NO, CHANNEL FIFTY SEVEN!" And they had CC, but it was completely blank.

...Because it's incorrect. That's why Sissi is Sissi and Ulrich is Ulrich, not Ulrick or something. And it bothers me. Plus, the show is French. That's like Americanizing all the names in an anime or something.

Thanks. I wish I could screencap some of these lines, but the TV's the end of the daisy chain - doesn't have any outputs. I might see if the DVD player apps on my PC can screencap captioning.

dr xana wrote:hopefully they have the same captoner do all the episodes so he will get an idea of whats going on and make less mistakes

I've seen so many oddities in captioning that I have no idea how they do it. For instance:
- Harvey Birdman: Two different spellings of one word ("marvy" vs. "marvey") alternating almost perfectly. If this episode uses "marvy" the next will be "marvey", and vice versa. There had to be two captioners working on the show.
- Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi: The DVD closed captions are different from the ones Cartoon Network runs.

As to tonight's Code Lyoko, the opening theme was better. One or two mistakes were fixed, and one of the others was flagged with a question mark. At least the captioner knew he/she was wrong. Of course, given what I've seen on Harvey Birdman, that might mean that tomorrow's has the same errors as Vertigo.

Darkborn wrote:I saw it today with captions. When they said "Scyphozoa" there was someting like [Undescribed] placed there instead. They only said it once, so I only got to see it once.

"[Indistinct]", actually, which at least looks better than "XXX".

The "Virtualization" line was captioned properly this time (the second time it was said, anyway). While the line was missing the first time, they'd just come back from commercial and I find that sometimes CN chops the first captioning line after the ads end.

In yesterdays episode, Cold War, just after the first commerical, the show came back on with jerrmie saying 'virutuialzation' (sp), but they did not caption it, they did well with many of the sound effects, but they did not do all of them (not complaing about that)

PS: we should start a new thread just for caption errors!

Or you could put them either in this thread or in the Mix-Up/Weird Sighting's thread. That kind of thing would fit into those thread's topics rather well. :)

Of course, given the debate over words like "Scyphozoa", I'm wondering what would be considered a misspelling.:)

(And yes, they finally spelled it out in the captioning. As "Scipizoa", presumably extrapolated from the Carthage password Scipio, displayed the scene previous.)

I think that's how it's spelled. The captioners don't have any reference material and are just giving it their best guess based on what they see and hear. (Just as everyone here was for a while, if I remember correctly.)

(Off-topic, but trying to give an example)

Ahem... how to put an example? Oh, I know.

In spanish tabloids and newspapers, they call Prince Charles as Carlos, then to Henry they call him Enrique, and to William, Guillermo. It sounds pointless to me, and as my view goes, when they baptize or name you once, it stays. And if you have a spanish, german, english, chinese, etc. name, stick to it. Why translation on names? It's pointless to me.

Oh... now I think Skipizoa got banned, for ranting about this. Bugger, I missed the fun.

Am I the only one who can read that last part?

But to stay on topic, I've actually never seen captions on CL before, maybe it's my abnormal connection. (Cable-to-VCR-to-TV)

Ever see captions on anything? Ideally if they come in for one thing, they should come in for another. And CN's only had these captioned since Monday, despite the CC logo in the corner for months now. (I considered naming this thread "CN CC CL", but it was a touch too cryptic. :) ) And I've got a more complex connection than yours (I have a DVD recorder in the mix) and I can see them fine. Unless your VCR is messing them up - which is possible. My DVD recorder tends to intersperse random junk in with the captions, but that's only if it's running.

Captioning's standard these days on televisions - that I've seen, anyway - unlike a few years back where you had to buy a separate box to do it. Which is cool - I know a lot of people who are deaf enough to use it but who aren't deaf enough to go through the trouble of getting a dedicated gizmo. (I've got family that did a lot of work in the cement drilling industry.)
