yeah...but Im sure many upon many have been through worse. I should count what luck stars I do have for at least being able to go to school. And a decent one at that. The classes are good...just the kids act like they're rich or something.

I go to a public school with about 2,000 students, co-ed. It's a good town with a good school system, so for the most part there are no real problems. The windows are installed upside down and backwards, the architecture of the school is completely impractical for the New England weather, we have a bunch of crazy teachers that can barely tell Algebra II from a Calculus class, etc. But it could always be worse. I used to be in a school system that cut virtually all of its extracuriculuar (akg;adf hate that word) activities, cut gym, foreign languages, art, music and performing arts classes, stop ped busing, laid off some fifteen-odd teachers, and increased class size to thirty five. Wow. I'm glad I moved out of there.

Education in my town of Carmarthen in Wales for the last 50 years has been shaky. After asking my Dad, I got the full history.

In the 1950's, the students would take a test a test at age 11. Those who passed (like my Dad) attended the Grammar School. Boys on the East campus, girls on the West campus. Those who failed attended the Secondary Modern, which was based quarter a mile away.

In the 1960's, the Grammar school on both campus and the Secondary modern reached it capability. The Girls Grammar was moved to a new site on the town outskirts. The Secondary Modern moved to a new site 200 metres from the new Girl's, while the old one was restarted as a primary school called Ysgol y-Dderyem. The Boys Grammar expanded into the old Girls.

In the 1970's, education in Britain was reformed. State Grammar schools were abolished, but private ones still exist today. Secondary moderns and State single sex schools were abolished as well. This was a big problem for Carmarthen, which also needed a school that taught in the median of the Welsh language.

All the closed were closed down and reformed as Comperenise schools. The Girls Grammar became Queen Elizabeth Cambria (The Latin word for Wales) School, or QECS. The Secondary Modern became Queen Elizabeth Maridunum (The Latin word for Carmarthen)
School, or QEMS. The old Boys Grammar becoming the Welsh school, Ysgol Bro Myrddin.

In the 1990's, Bro Myrddin moved out the old Grammar school to a new site outside the town, across the river from QECS and QEMS. It was built on a swamp. It sinks a 2 miler metres each year.

I started attending QEMS in 2001, with my Dad joining the board of Governors a year later. Finally, 2 years ago, out of the blue, Dad told me one evening 'The schools are merging'

It was announced next day that QECS and QEMS were to be merger to from a new school, Queen Elizabeth High School, with a new building to be built on the Cambria playing fields to replace the shoddy buildings.

The first term of QEHS started on Sep 4th 2005, with me attending Year 11, and my ever so Welsh sister attending Bro Myrddin in Year 8.

Public schooling from Kindergarten to 2nd grade. 3rd grade, homeschooled....Skipped fourth grade, no lie...never been to fourth...Fifth grade, homeschool. My mom said after fifth, that we were going back to public schools because homeschooling is too expensive. I had a choice: sixth grade, or fifth grade again. I chose to repeat fifth, because the people would be my age...So yea, easily passed 5th grade both times.

In the beginning of 7th grade, I moved. Lived with grandparents for two months, no education during this time. Went back to school near the end...Did okay...In public schools ever since...(Except when I missed two months in Eighth grade)
What will you remember me for?

I've changed schools so much.. it's not fair I've never been in a school system for more than 3 years. I went to one school from kindergarten to 2nd, and then I changed to another one in 3rd and had to start all over again with making friends. And by the time I actually had 2 people I could almost call my "best friends" at the start of 6th grade, we moved to Ohio and I had to do it again, that time it was even harder because people already had friendships and it was harder for me to reach out to people. Now that I'm in 9th grade, I have a couple best friends, a few friends who it's debatable to call "best", and a few dying friendships. And I never was much of a social person. I never feel like I fit in anywhere, even with my true friends that I have now. And plus the move from junior high to high school split up our "group" so now I basically just see two before school and at lunch. (Hanging outside of school is a problem since they're both girls and their moms think all boys are evil) The others I talk to on AIM and stuff occasionally (we've tried going to the mall.. it didn't work out too well) and say hello to in the hallway, but I feel like we're slipping away. I do kind of have a new friend in one of my classes, but we don't talk outside of school and because of the stupid way they split up the freshman to go to one of the two main high schools, he's going to the opposite of mine. I really feel like I'm anti-social or something like that. I barely talk to anyone since I don't know them and it's hard to get to know them, because basically you have class and can't talk to anyone. No one talks to me either, so basically I'm "that kid who's always drawing in some sketchbook." Or once, "the guy who sits behind me in Algebra."

*sigh* anyway, sorry about that. I didn't mean to rattle off. It's kind of off-topic too.

I JUST moved last week and I had to go to a different school and leave all of my friends behind. I still talk to them all of course, but right now I feel like this whole move is a vacation and i will be coming home soon. I've already made a couple of friends in my school and the people are friendly there. I'm going to give it a week or two until I have a a group of friends because I'm really outgoing and I enjoy being around people as much as they enjoy being around me. i also sort of have a boyfriend.... but not quite. soon though.

People...

Anyways, the funny thing about you guys is that most of you from USA go to public schools and yet you can afford PS2 Games, Internet connection, and many other stuff... in my country, people whose children go to public school are mostly very poor.

Btw, did I said before I went to a private school and currently going to a private university as well? Both of them are cheap, compared to prices in the US.

And that is why most of us in the USA go to public schools. Because we're capitalist pigs. :D

I heard about colleges like that in my Spanish class. *shrugs*

Hehe... in Peru, both public and private are forced to wear uniform, except some private schools that allow their students to not go with the uniform until April.

Public schools begin by April and end by December. It's crappy, because of bad teachers (they get piad no more than $170), low budgets, stupid students, strikes, etc.

Private schools usually begin between the end of February or by the last week of March. They usully end by the end of November or before Christmas. Private schools are better (teaching level, quality, activities, etc.), but authorities are corrupt (some of them) and certain school activities just drain more money out of your pockets. And don't get me started on the parents association of every prom...

And if I had children, there's no effing way I would let them step foot on a public school. At least, not on Latin America. Although, if they go to school, I'd have them training karakte lessons.

Just to make this topic a bit more interesting: if you had children, would you let them go to public or private education system?

Oh, man, that SUCKS! >.< I cherish the fact that we don't have to wear uniforms in the Lakota districht very much.

Hmm, if I had kids? I'd probably let them go to public schools, if they knew the right things to do (aka not get involved with drugs, gangs, sex, etc)

I definitely wouldn't want them either getting stuck up (not saying that all private school kids are stuck up) or feeling like they were being left out or getting over-oppressed by rules and standards and stuff by going to private school...
