Moderators: The Administrators, Moderators
TheLordOfAppleFreaks wrote:SL, I understand that you want our community to expand, but we have had a bad experience with spambots and then there was the entire Yigal incident...
I expect that some of these new members are simply bots willing to propogate Nike shoes or Viagra or... well, does anyone remember that one bot that was advertising "big titties?"
I understand that some people are genuinely interested in our forums, but with increased site activity, we see increased bot activity, and TB3 might not want to take that risk.

SearchingLyoko wrote:If they are E-MAILING me telling me how much they are a CL fan and they desperately want to get in, then how are they a bot?
Danperteet especially wants to get in. I know him from several other forums.
SearchingLyoko wrote:I agree.
I'm not exactly sure how you moderators and admins work, but I'm pretty sure you only have a button or two to press to say bye-bye to the bot forever (heck, if you need help, I'll do it).
Plus, are we that cruel to turn away loving CL fans?
Dante wrote:I agree with carth and SL, if they ARE spambots then just do a ip ban or something on them. And with what SL said that makes us as bad as moonscoop if we pretty much just say "No no more"

Hey, if I didn't take the initiative to e-mail you people asking to confirm me, I probably wouldn't be here.
Could you imagine life without me? At least here?
We ARE turning away perfectly great people. There is no "maybe" about it.
ccbtimewiz wrote:Honestly I'm not even sure why LF has member activation on. On most forums I browse on, approval is done through member activation along with semi-heavy captcha (or reCaptcha).
ccbtimewiz wrote:Considering the age of this bb, I would assume the captcha isn't very good which is why it is easily exploitable by bots. There are update packs around that can fix this.
In conclusion, admin activation isn't that big a deal if its a few weeks, but it is very unnecessary for such a small forum (or in this case, a forum dying down). At least this is what I think.
SearchingLyoko wrote:My apologies Mewberries.
First, the e-mail's did not even occur to me. They completely slipped my mind.
SearchingLyoko wrote:Second, I had no idea whatsoever that you did a weekly activation. I've seen people registered for more then a week and never post... so that tells me that there may be another problem with getting them to post. This is certainly not your fault, but I myself want to look into that; a way to entice them to post.
SearchingLyoko wrote:One of the people who have e-mailed me (and by the way, they e-mail me because they know me from other forums, and since I joined, they asked if I could ask you) has been waiting since Dec. 29, which is longer then a week. This person also says he cannot access your public e-mail address to e-mail you.
SearchingLyoko wrote:Okay... I think I see an activity revival project, though small, in the works.
You guys can work out the tech stuff.
I personally am trying to think of a way to basically hook new members... so when they join they don't forget they are EAGER.

EDIT: Someone else on the CL Forums just told me they haven't had their account activated in 3-4 months...
So yeah... there is a problem going on here...
SearchingLyoko wrote:Thanks teebs.
I completely COMPLETELY (like you have no idea how completely) understand being late doing stuff... but Dreadlord (and that's his name here) hasn't had his account activated in 3+ Months...
And if he hasn't... who knows how many else.
Lord.Quackstar wrote:I agree with ccbtimewiz that a more heavy duty captcha with a custom list of questions would cut out 99.9% of the bots. And you complain that bots are getting past the blocks? Well thats probably because this is an ancient version of phpBB. The upgrade process might take 30 minutes at most, with most of that waiting for the upload to finish, the other checking for problems. Set a time when the admins can all be on at once to find bugs and fix problems quickly. Hell, even solicit help from us programmers that might be able to offer more information.
And you can never, NEVER stop spambots. One will always get through, and your screwed. Its just a fact of life.
smiller wrote:What? Yigal was... here? *laughs* That guy has been spamming Code Lyoko forums for years, trying to steal passwords. How can he call himself a Code Lyoko fan?
smiller wrote:It was a real difficulty for me to be activated. I had to ask Xana Never Dies to try to talk to the admins about it, and then try to get a hold of MewBerries on Deviantart. It took me a year to finally be activated. :/
Heres an idea: Make people who are not logged in able to post in the Newbies forum, and you have to post in there to be activated. There may be spam, but it would not be too bad.... I wouldn't think. Are there enough mods to cover the spam load of that?
