Ah, Thanksgiving is almost upon us. It was nice of the Pilgrims to stop killing the Indians long enough to have a feast with them. Apparently, both sides forgot that one lesson in Kindergarten about "sharing".

Thanksgiving is (or was) considered a Christian Holiday, so I think this isn't off-topic.

Actually, Thanks Giving is merely the latest version of ancient harvest festivals which have existed since neolithic times. The Idea is twofold: Eat all of the food which doesn't keep, and fatten yourself up for winter. The feat (in ancient times at least) would last for days. We'd still have the holiday even if the mayflower had never reached the Americas.

Ah, but Good Ol' President Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official Holiday as a "prayerful day of Thanksgiving".

Earlier, President George Washington issued a national Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1789. He wrote, "Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country...for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed...and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually...To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best."

Thanksgiving is a National Holiday, not a Holiday.

Harvest Festivals are to stuff ourselves, which is what T-day has become.

Harvest Festivals were used to thank whatever deities the culture worships for a plentiful harvest. They served the piratical purpose of preparing people to survive a long winter.

Like I said before, we'd still be celebrating, religious holiday or not (this still would be a religious holiday due to the nature of harvest festivals).

Actually, now that I think about it, many Christian traditions have roots in paganism....

Thanksgiving isn't considered a christan oliday any more, and since you're tlking about the holiday and not the religeon... it's off topic. it's a little confuzing... but... well, I'm sorry. I could try to split the thread, though. I've never done that before! and if I can't, then you can make a thanksgiving thread! if we don't allready have one...

Dah da daaah! Mod AngelBolt has learned new skill! SPLIT POST ATTACK!

4. Porn of various genres

5. That I have a steady job

6. My car, a final gift from grandma downs

7. I'll soon have an ipod and can ditch the damn CD player

8. THat my friends are all well

Actually, they were Seperatists. Seperatists thought teh Anglican Church was becoming more like th Catholic church, so they split and left for America.

Your not thanking anything. Your being thankful/humble of all the blessings in your life. You can thank whoever you want if you feel the need too but its mostly just about being humble and satisfied with what you have in a society where we mostly just think about what we don't.

Yesh.

My family actually came over on the Mayflower, and we're direct descendants to John Carver, and we have like ten birthdays all in one week, (including mine) on thanksgiving, so we usually get together for that, but I'm sad, because we can't this year.

But still, I'm thankful for LyokoFreak and the many hours of laughing it has given me, I'm thankful for my friends Stephanie, Tara, and Ashley, for just being there no matter what, and I'm thankful for the people at the local orchard who said they'll set aside some apples for us next year and ship them down to Florida. And even some Maple sugar cand!

Are we posting about what we're thankful for, and what our plans are? Bah.

This Thanksgiving will be like any other day. My father will celebrate Thanksgiving with his family while my mother, brother, and I stay at home. We briefly considered going with him, but then we realized that his family doesn't like us, and we don't like them.

It all works out. We'll probably make some coffee, maybe have a turkey, then go our separate ways for the rest of the night. And it's not that we don't do holidays, it's just that we can't.

Sucks.

Awww. D:

I'm pretty much thankful for everything I have, that I have a good family where everyone loves one another, that I am beginning to make some friends (FINALLY) in real life, and that I have you guys. Really. You whine and gripe like crazy and probably hate me and would like nothing better but to impale me on a stick, but I love you anyway :D

My plans...this year, I'm staying at home. The family decided that the grandparents were getting too old to take loads of company at the holidays, so we're just going to have a little Thanksgiving. I rarely go for teh all-out gorge, though.

Oh, and, um, JF. Not to insult you at all, but it generally keeps things more civilized and peaceful if we keep religion out of threads that don't warrant its discussion. kthxbai.

EDIT: Nevermind. Didn't realize this was split from the Christans thread. Just, keep that advice for your life ahead or something :D

The pilgrims weren't the first to have Thanksgiving...

The colonists at Charles City, VA, beat them by two years. ;)

I'm thankful for lots of stuff, including this forum. It's a delightful mishmash of personalities..

(And nationalities. Do they celebrate Thanksgiving across the pond?)

Ah, so the day has arrived. The day where we celebrate decapitated birds by eating them.

I helped cook a turkey. It was all pink and stretchy and stuff before we put it in the oven, and I got to pour salt in its innards. :D

(Remember, this thread is about descriptions of your Thanksgiving. Kay?)

So I have you to blame for that missile strike... :D

Seriously, I had turkey (I like it best ungravyed and salted), maybe 7 rolls, a couple pickle slices, a sprig of leek, a little salad, some other stuff no doubt, and 2 slices of pumpkin pie.

Oh, and a brownie. ;)

My Thanksgiving was...well, to put it simply, barely unlike any other day xD I didn't go anywhere, didn't see anyone (couldn't anyway, my family's pretty much all live 2+ hours away from me), and didn't really do anything special. Not to mention I slept all day, but that's because of a recent ordeal to see a concert that involved walking a few miles, but that's a different story for a different day ;P

However, I will say today is the day I've been waiting for ^^ Not because it's Black Friday, GODS no (especially since I have to work today. HELP ME @_@). But because, to me anyway, Thanksgiving food always tastes better as leftovers instead of the initial servings. ....In fact, I'm going to go make me a couple sandwiches right now xD ^^
