I'm not sure if Bloodstone (who sang "Natural High" and "Go On And Cry", among others) is considered Philly soul, but they sound like part of the genre...

While looking through those articles, I found out that Eugene Record, founder, singer and songwriter for the Chi-Lites, died last Friday. Go with God, 'Gene!

First of all, how do you define a band? Are singing groups included, or do they have to play their own instruments?

I can't say I have an absolute favourite; I like too many. Some that come near (and may be at) the top of the list are:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience (I call them JHX, but I don't think anyone else does...)
Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR)
Santana
Bob Marley & The Wailers (of course...)
Steel Pulse
Third World

...umm, who else again? That must be it, unless I've forgo... THE EAGLES!

I have not included the Philly Soul groups 'coz I don't know if any of them play instruments (but I should therefore include Bloodstone, 'coz they do...)

Favourite song... hmm... that's difficult...

Singing quality: Vocals do not get any se... (oops this isn't bko) any greater than Sade's smoky voice in "Smooth Operator" Apart from that, the best singer I've ever heard (a recording of) is Nat "King" Cole. His daughter sounds downright ordinary by comparison.

Lyrics: The greatest poet of the twentieth century was Bob Dylan. 'Nuff said.

Harmonies: Lessee... Any doo-wop group and just about any soul group (including Boyz II Men) could harmonize better than The Beatles, and The Beatles were great at harmony. Simon & Garfunkel and Hall & Oates deserve mention too. Then there are The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. But are any of these better than The Righteous Brothers?

Guitar: There are faster, wilder and more spectacular guitarists than Hendrix around now, but would there have been had Hendrix not shown them the way? Hendrix is to electric guitar what Bach is to music in general.

Drums: I am conflicted between the late John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Roger Taylor of Queen.

I'll think of more later...
