What Is The Carthage Project?

After every episode in season 2, the end credits toyed with us. What is Project Carthage? In the key, we discovered this:

Project Carthage was a Military program used to block enemy communications.

But why would Hopper design Lyoko...

To destroy Carthage.

?

Mystery still surrounds Carthage.

Actually Hopper created Xana to destroy Carthage not Lyoko.

I think it was a military program used to block enemy communications, until they discovered the ability to gain access to any system by using specters... maybe they had Hopper help out with that until he saw what they were using it for so he created XANA to destroy it.... that still doesn't explain when Lyoko exists though. And then what happened to it? Did they have a supercomputer? Was Hopper involved at all? *rubs temples*

Makes sense apart from one thing, France was in the West, so the enemy would be those evil, filthy, Communist, Soviet Reds! The USSR! andnorthvietnam,thosedastardlyveitcong,chinaetc

Personally, I think Carthage was the fruits of a Government Think Tank, in which Hopper was involved. Then the Military became along and perverted his ideas.

just to clear up any confusion, Franz created XANA to destroy Carthage. Lyoko was created as a sanctuary for him and Aelita after the government started coming after them.

WARNING!--very thought out theories ahead--

(1) Well, i think that carthage was created to block enemy communications, since maybe franz worked with the government, but then, seeing what it could do, stole the now government technology to a secret lab, from where he created xana to destroy it, but maybe something went wrong with the ai technology, and xana saw how cruel humans could be after seeing what the government was planning to do, so bent out on trying to destroy the crooked humanity. Once seeing that he could not win on his turf, he tried to get on ours.

(2) maybe xana was created by (something, someone?), killed the poor guy/thing, and once discovered by the group, made up an ai, a story behind it, and so on, to hide his activities, and was just building up his power to get out through the real world, but first did some research on the names, like franz hopper, a guy suddenly dissapeared, it would make sense to use that name, to leave a mystery.

Actually, France left NATO in 1967. Well, you can nitpick that, but for all purposes based in reality, they left.

Again, we are assuming that Franz Hopper's intentions were noble based solely on Aelita's memories. It could very well be that he was the bad guy here.

I think Project Carthage was bilt to block enemy communication. How? XANA, I think at the begining XANA was not as powerful and Franz and the rest of team working on Project Carthage could contral it. In one of the later episodes in season two, Franz Hoppers diary tells us Fanz turned back time to excape his enemys. We also know that XANA gets more power when time is turned back. When Fanz turnd back time XANA most likly had enough power to disobay Franz orders.

According to whom? The only thing we know about Franz Hopper was:

1. He wanted to destroy Project Carthage, a military program to block communication. It's up in the air whether Carthage was good or bad. Hopper may have simply become an anti-government type that wanted to disrupt their program. We aren't told either way.

2. Hopper had planned to take Aelita into Lyoko, without her knowledge or consent, and in his own words, become its master. So Aelita was right when she said he stole her life.

3. Hopper is very powerful for a prisoner in Lyoko. He can wrest control of a tower from Xana. He can take control of Xana's monsters. He can bring Aelita back to life.

We also don't know who the "men in black" are. We automatically assume they're government agents. They may be, but they may have been there to arrest Hopper as a terrorist, rather than being the typical jack-booted thugs. They may have been foreign agents come to stop Hopper. Carthage may have been a foreign project. Hell, they may have been the repo men come to take Hopper's car because he couldn't pay the bills. Aelita would not have remembered them in any other way because she was young and they were entering her home.

I'm not on either side of the issue, but I do recognize that it's too easy to assume he was good because Aelita saw him that way. And he probably is because I doubt a show like Code Lyoko will get that in depth with intentions, but what we've seen makes nothing conclusive.
