Elton John Wants The Internet Shut Down...

Postby MY85 » Thu Aug 02, 2007 9:19 pm

Give it a read. I agree with a few of his points, but shutting down the Internet is just stupid. If it wasn't for Limewire and other programs of the sorts, I wouldn't been exposed to many bands and musicians...

Elton can't make good cash out of the net, I guess.

Either way, I never found his music really great as people claim. His last album bombed. Still, the music scene still sucks because of the idiots (Shakira, Fergie, Beyoncé, Akon, Gwen Stefani, among other clowns) ranking up high on MTV, VH1, Billboard and many other places. 2007 hasn't been a good year for music, really. I can seriously count with my fingers the good songs that came out in 2007.

Maroon 5 got hugely famous due to the Internet. Their album Songs About Jane was a good album, but I think their new song Makes Me Wonder is horrible and doesn't make me want to buy their album.

Many of the emo-punk bands like Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy and others made themselves famous thanks to the Internet. In FOB's case, prior to Dance, Dance, they weren't really that famous. After the song hit, their fame skyrocketed on the Internet. FOB's new album sucks, by the way.

Web rant ... Sir Elton says the internet is destroying music

By SIR ELTON JOHN
August 01, 2007

POP legend Sir Elton John wants the internet CLOSED DOWN.

Never one to keep his opinions to himself, the Rocket Man has waded into cyberspace with all guns blazing.

He claims it is destroying good music, saying: “The internet has stopped people from going out and being with each other, creating stuff.

“Instead they sit at home and make their own records, which is sometimes OK but it doesn’t bode well for long-term artistic vision.

“It’s just a means to an end.

“We’re talking about things that are going to change the world and change the way people listen to music and that’s not going to happen with people blogging on the internet.

“I mean, get out there — communicate.

“Hopefully the next movement in music will tear down the internet.

“Let’s get out in the streets and march and protest instead of sitting at home and blogging.

“I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span.

“There’s too much technology available.

“I’m sure, as far as music goes, it would be much more interesting than it is today.”

Multi-millionaire Elton, who turned 60 earlier this year, has admitted in the past that he is a bit behind the times. The Grammy award-winner was once quoted as saying: “I am the biggest technophobe of all time.

“I don’t have a mobile phone or an iPod or anything.

“I am such a Luddite when it comes to making music. All I can do is write at the piano.”

Sales of Elton’s last album The Captain & The Kid were disappointing — it barely shifted 100,000 copies. And in the past Sir Elt has opposed illegal downloading of his music from the net.

But the flamboyant singer has embraced the web in other ways.

The 60th birthday concert Sir Elton played to a 20,000-strong crowd at New York’s Madison Square Garden was streamed live over the internet.

The singer also announced earlier this year that his entire back catalogue of albums would be made available for digital download.

The internet has played a huge role in kick-starting the careers of some of Britain’s best new talent.

Sandi Thom shot to fame after broadcasting webcam concerts from her London basement flat, while both the Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen acknowledge the part played by the web in their success.

But Elton also complained about the quality of music being released.

He said: “In the early Seventies there were at least ten albums released every week that were fantastic.

“Now you’re lucky to find ten albums a year of that quality.

“And there are more albums released each week now than there were then.”

I guess that’s what Sir Elt would call a net loss . . .

Okay... so how are you supposed to get music making software? You want everybody to try to make music, but cut off their access to freeware? People these days are disinclined to pay $20+ for a program that does something simple. (Except MS Office... do you need anything more than Wordpad?)

Anyways, shutting down the Internet is next to impossible. You'd have to get everybody who owns a piece to shut it down. Go ahead, try to convince AOL to die for five years. And even then, the geeks would just set up their own network.
(yeah, the cool links in my old sig died. :( A few nerdy newish projects are here. )

Elton doesn't know what the hell he's talking about (as usual). The guy loves to blow hot air out his arse. No one takes his ranting seriously. If anything the net has increased people's communication with each other. He makes it sound like the internet is grinding the music industry to a halt because people blog. Think of all the independent artists that have achieved success through internet radio. I love how he contradicts himself by releasing his albums online and simultaneously requesting the net to be shut down.

Another question... it might be touchy, but I'm focusing the question towards Elton...

What about homosexuality?

The thing you have to understand about the internet, it's not a big truck! It's a series of tubes! Things get put into those tubes, and they get clogged. People spend so much time waiting for their messages to get through that they no longer go out and make good music! They just make all this techno stuff and... it's a means to an end! Ergo, visa vis, concordantly... you know what? I have no idea what the hell I'm saying. I just thought it would make me sound smart.

*Snicker*

I'm sorry but this is funny to me. Does anyone expect an honest criticism from a man who calls himself "the world's biggest Luddite"? He says there's too much technology. how 'bout the technology that allows people to live comfortably if they have a serious medical issue? Shutting down the net? That's just pretty, pretty..pretty something.

Sorry, I just love high tech stuff.

He says that Pavement sucks? Well, them and Grinspoon are popular because of the Internets. He has low sales because he's a homo freak, duh. People don't like Captain and the Kid. We should stick with his very old albums, like "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

My opinion is this: Elton Johns music is good, but he himself is a douchebag. I mean, come on! HSut down the inter net just cause people keep making bad music!? Ain't going to happen, Elty. You're trying to oppose the world. you kill the 'net, you kill the world's economy.
