Strong earthquake strikes Peru

Postby Ghost Guest » Wed Aug 15, 2007 10:07 pm

A 7.9 magnitude eathquake struck Peru today. 17 people have been reported dead and other 70 injured. A tsunami warning has been issued for many countries, including Costa Rica, where big waves may hit our Pacific coast in about two hours. You can read more about it here if you wish.

Wow... seriously, I never expected a thread about this.

I'm alive. My house isn't destroyed at all and my Internet connection works fine as we speak.

I'll talk about it on my Livejournal later. I'll drop my entry on this in a moment.

Hope my family's all right. Some of my family from my mother's side of the family live there. I'm surprised my mother hasn't mentioned this. I think she might talk about it tomorrow and call me when she's at work or something. Idunno.

It would be extremely difficult to expect a phone call right now. Phone signal and mobiles are pretty much dead at the moment and you're lucky if they work well for a moment.

Weird that the net's working, though. But I can't complain about the net. :D

Well, I like to surprise people every now and then... I'm glad you're ok.
By the way, the tsunami warning has been cancelled.

Well, this forum is more USA-orientated. Talking about other events around the world is something a little different. I figured nobody would care about the earthquake unless you posted it. If the Earthquake would have taken place in New York or LA, this thread would be really active. But in Peru, who cares? Any tragic event outside the USA doesn't mean that much to the USA crowd. I'm not trying to sound rude, but that's how I see things.

Thanks for caring. And yes, I know about the tsunami thing. But I'm far from the ocean...

Yeah, to be honest, it seems a lot of it's like that.

But hey, when we're in the net, it's almost like we're in the same place, and we still worry.

Depends on the moment and what kind of event happens. And define "America". But as for USA, it depends on the state and the type of accident. If it calls my attention, I'll care about it to a certain degree.

Glad you're ok, Rodri.

It's not that we, as Americans, do not report the news from around the world; it just gets relegated to the end of the newscasts, right before the sports. All-news channels like CNN, MSNBC, Fox Nes and the like are more apt to cover world events, ebcause they crave anything to fill their time. I'm sure the moajority of people here care nothing more than for stuff that happens near them. I listen to the BBC overnight service every night at midnight before I go to sleep, so I get a different view of the news.

Anyway, Rodri, very glad you're OK. From the reports today, the death toll has risen quite dramatically. And I read your LiveJournal, too. It's OK to freak out and be unsure fo yourself in a crisis. When I had a tornado pass over my house, I did the same thing.

It's all very scientifical. |D

It's ok to be unsure of yourself yes, but panicking can make any situation worse by making you lose your head. I'm glad your safe though Mister Rodri.
