I haven't seen it, but I know a few songs from it. We had to do some songs from it in our chorus class this year, but I had known the songs before we did it. I like "No One Mourns the Wicked," and "Loathing."

I have never seen the musical, but I have read the book.

DO YOURSELF ALL A FAVOR AND *NEVER* READ IT. It's awful. From what I've heard, the musical is much better. The book is needlessly perverted, Elphaba is some kind of transexual... lesbian... thing (which never gets cleared up), *and* she goes nuts at the end. It's not a good book.

I want to see the musical, though (gets rid of all that pointless speculation and makes Elphie a lot less creepy).

I know a lot of people who love singing the songs in chorus for extra credit (Most littls pricky divas who think everyone loves themmm *Growls and crunches paper* Umm... ah-heh :D ) But my best friend and her little sister did one for a talent show, it was awesome!

Because it's true. =P

I never heard of it, but it doesn't sound remotely interesting.

If you're a guy, that's a given. If you're a girl... well... um... *shifty eyes* Trust me, it isn't a good book. Decidedly BKO-ish, and... ugh... it's just unbelievably pointless. I think the reason it bugs me so much is because it could have been so good- I like the characters, the plot elements, the take on Oz... it's just... terribly mishandled.

To say that the musical simplified the romantic plot would be like saying the third Harry Potter movie is "slightly trippy". Elphie and Glinda had a thing in the first section of the book, but Elphie tricked Glinda into leaving so she could stay in the Emerald City and become a political activist. I actually kind of liked that- liked the *idea* again, not the way it was handled. Guys should NOT be allowed to write about lesbians. Someone needs to take away the author's laptop and put him in solitary confinement. ><

She did eventually get together with Fiyero, though (that was a long while later). And then he *died* and the only part of the book that I found tolerable (if just as weird as the rest of it) ended. And unlike in the musical, he doesn't come back to life.

That's because the book is so totally trippy. Seriously, you should have heard me and Rachel reading bits and bobs aloud... so. F-ing. Funny. I'd list some examples of why, but most of them are decidedly BKO-ish (which is why they're funny... soooo totally written by a guy).

I saw the musical last month when it was in town and I loved it. The soundtrack is probably my most played cd right now. I was amazed at how well everything was tied in, even how she got the hat! I saw it with my aunt, and by the end of Act I we actually had bets running on whether Fiyero was gonna get turned into the Lion or the Scarecrow!

Despite knowing all that I know about it after reading all the above posts, I still want to buy the book my next trip to Borders, because I would like to compare the musical and the book myself.

I would say read the book because there *were* some good parts ("City of Emeralds", for instance, even though that's where quite a bit of the weird prose comes in). I'll give it this- it never got boring. I dunno, maybe I'm just a prude, but I feel that it could have been handled so much better (the first section of the book, now that I think about it, starts with Elphie listening to the Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow discussing her... orientation).

But do yourself a favor and just check it out at the library. It's not worth the fifteen bucks (probably more at Borders ><). Trust me. I hope Gregory Maguire chokes on the money he got from me... *shakes fist*

...and yet, despite all of my griping about the book, I would still read Son of a Witch (the sequel about Elphie's son Lir- is he in the musical?) if I saw it at the library. (Lir was one of the things I liked- his crush on Dorothy was cute and actually *tasteful*).

No, there's no mention of Lir in the musical - it ends with Elphaba running off with Fiyero.

I felt gypped when I found out that the musical had a happy ending... in the book, Elphie goes nuts and dies, and and and... ugh.

Besides, Fiyero's POV (a.k.a. "City of Emeralds") was, like I've said, the most enjoyable part of the book (except for Galinda's POV in one of the first chapters... I prefer most of the secondary characters to Elphie, just because she was so *raped*).

Now I really wanna go see the musical... I heard most of the songs (God bless Youtube).

Oh poo...Because in a book she has a kid, does that mean I can't write my own about Elphie having a daughter?

Anyway, those who have seen the musical...

I nicked the soundtrack from a friend... now I'm jealous... :P I liked "Dancing Through Life"- just the beginning part where Fiyero sings, though.

Considering that there aren't any Wicked fics on FFN... I don't think it would make much of a difference, XD

That's a good song...a bit long, but a good one. I have two favorites. "Defying Gravity" (best song EVER!!) and "No Good Deed". I love fast, intesnse songs, and the saying "No good deed goes unpunished" fits perfectly with poor Elphie's life.
Any body else?
