Gameplay or Graphics?

Postby darktemplar » Tue May 16, 2006 3:46 pm

Which do you think is more important in computer games: Graphics or Gameplay, stuff game has ^inside^. I really can't find an extremum for graphics. For gameplay the extreme are Roguelikes, where you use a text terminal to display stuff(hm, now they try to use simple tiled graphics). So what do you think about it?

Alpha Centauri
Deus Ex (the original, NOT Invisible War)
Total Annihilation
Fallout and Fallout 2
Counter-Strike

That's my "leetest games ever" list (the Age of Wonders series and the original Halo get honorable mentions for being generally cool). I haven't played CS: Source, so all I can speak for is Counter-Strike 1.6, but it sure is leet.

It's all about the gameplay. I guess being able to run around in a world that looked true to life would be pretty cool, but if the gameplay was on the weaker side of average, I don't see how the game can be truly "leet" then. Of course, everybody's heard the same old song and dance about "innovative" gameplay (and graphics, for that matter) so many times that it's hard to get excited anymore. Graphics, on the other hand, can be proven with screenshots. I'm figuring (hoping) that's why so many gaming magazines obsess over graphics in previews.

I think no matter what there needs to be a balance. It the game has stunning graphics, but all you do is run around collectiong a giant glowing ball in a playing field the size of a postage stamp, it's not gonna sell that well.

But, on the other hand, you have a heart-racing white knuckle action packed agme but the graphics is the equivalent of pac man, no, that won't do.

Metal Gear Solid 1. 9 years old. I only got hold of it a year ago in a discount bin. But wow! Gameplay rocks!

And God of War. The best balance of gameplay and graphics ever

When it comes to a choice between Graphics or Gameplay in computer games, I'd have agree with AngelBolt. In my opinion, a good game is a game that has a solid combination of Graphics and Gameplay.

If it can come with desireable controls AND awesome graphics, such as things like Battlefield 2, then I'm happy.

But gameplay wins it every time. That's why I still play Halo.

This is why I never engage in arguments involving the extremes of the two. Either way, having a score of 100 in one and 0 in the other is going to suck. But if one had to be 90 and the other had to be 60... Which would be better? Methinks most would rather have awesome gameplay and let the graphics be a little sub-par rather than have wonderful graphics but weaker gameplay.

Personally, I say gameplay.

Just look at FF7 for example. Right now, people could say it has some of the worst graphics around (though they were good for back in the day)...but just look at it again for a second...its still has a fan base bigger than New York City, why? Because its one of the coolest games ever.

So yeah...gameplay over graphics (but having both is sweet).

I say gameplay. Would you buy a game you don't even like just to stare at the graphics? If you love graphics so much, then look around. There's no better special effect system than life ;)

Gameplay, Graphics just try to make the user think the game is good, I could play FF origins for like 5 hours and not get tired of the graphics because the gameplay is good, although KH2 has good Graphics, but I like the gameplay better. But did any of you guys see the PS3 version of FF7? The Graphics kicked A**, I wanna see if I could see that again, it was SHWEET!

Gameplay, storyline, and character development... Graphics to an extent, but it's really not what I pay most attention to. Also, I'm not a big fan of most RPG's cause I have a VERY short attention span and get easily frustrated. Turn-based makes me MAD. >O

The amount of comedy is also very, very high up there on my list. That is why Katamari Damacy makes me SMILE.
