A chat system?

Postby axslayer33 » Thu May 16, 2013 8:55 pm

I think it might of been brought up before...are there any plans to add a chat client to the site?

It was brought up in BKO. I recommended IRC, but I'm slightly biased. Chat history is an important feature since we don't have huge numbers, and while you can bolt that onto IRC its not what it was designed for.

There are also several questions you have to ask
  • Where do we put the chat?
  • Do we want to load chat on every page load?
  • When is AppleFreak going to have time?

Where and loading are simple-instead of embedding it in the site, we make the client, then link to it in the hotbar-that way it doesn't load all the time, but there's no hunting for the link.

As for time....I think I have some plutonium from Lybia somewhere....

I can answer a few of those:

  • I think it'd be trivial to add something at the top of the page to bring up the chat. Maybe below the image header.
  • I don't think it'd be that difficult to make it into an AJAX call; that way, the option is there but it only loads when people want it.
  • Now that finals are done with, I should have some more free time.

Since you guys are requesting it, I'll definitely consider doing it. IIRC, we were using IRC before the phpBB3 upgrade, but my memories are fuzzy. I'll consider it more in the morning.
I really gotta fix up this theme

A chat system is exactly what this forum needs.

Actually, after quickly thinking about it, I think that maybe a sitewide chat feature would be even nicer. I'm gonna implement into the header of the site a div that'll open up a chat. I'm considering making it IRC based for flexibility, but that'll come once I get the rest of the site features up to snuff.

How would you implement it though? A quick glance shows LF is on apache, which makes things like long-polling a crash waiting to happen.

XMPP based chat wouldn't be too intensive.
