We have installed some anit-spam security into our forum, which makes all new registered users pass a visual confirmation code. We also do not let users enter any personal information when registering, which means spambots can't enter any of their site info. Also, all users must have at least 20 posts and be a member for a week before they can post an URL.

I spoke to Ryouko, creator of the Rockman.exe online forums (their version of Star Way), and this was the advice that she posted would be good for stopping spambots.

While the security programs are out and the registered user visual code thing hasen't really worked, I think we should try the last two items: No posting URL's for a week and you're twenty posts up, and no personal data.

These last two seem to be simple and excellent suggestions, and if we were to put them into practice, that would be excellent!

But then existing members would have to go in and change their info and most wouldnt get the message, and it would be a big hassle.

What works for some may not work for the others.

No, I see no problems. You just can't add personal info during the registration process. you can add it later. It would only apply to new people.
