I disagree, first off because he was joking (which Yumi even noted), and secondly because with his grades, a failed midterm (which does indeed have a big impact on one's final grade for the year) would be a huge problem.

I disagree there too, as Odd and Ulrich might have gone away for two weeks, but spent the earlier part of their vacation at school. Especially now that we know what both of their respective home life's are like, it's not too far a stretch to believe that Ulrich and Odd would opt to spend most of their summer at Kadic with their friends.
What it comes down to is that, because dates aren't very well specified in the series, we have no real way of knowing how much time has passed and how old each individual kid is.
