I never really thought much about Xana's gender (if there is one). I always thought of Xana as a guy, but I dunno; maybe you're right.

Although its an interesting idea, it lacks evidence, so its mostly based on conjecture. If XANA was really Aelita's mother, how and why did Hopper do that to his wife? Why would he choose to make his own wife a weapon against Carthage? And why would XANA have malice against Aelita? I could understand problems with Hopper since, if your theory is true, he caused her condition, but why Aelita, her innocent daughter who had done nothing? And one last thing, if XANA was based on a human mind, why does it have an inhuman understanding of human thought and emotion? Until Franz Hopper, its understanding of humans is juvenile, only understanding base ideas and characteristics. I would think a system based fully on a human would be more understandible.

If we take what XANA said in Franz Hopper to be valid, XANA was created based on a multi-agent system which is what Jeremie's Marabounta was based upon. It seems odd to use her as a basis when it could of easily been just based upon an advanced AI system.

Again, its an interesting idea, but with the following criticisms. Answer those questions, and provide more evidence, and it could be an interesting topic for debate.

We see her "disappear" through Aelita's memory. Given Aelita's age when this happened, it could be concluded that she was either not present at her mother's death, or she could not comprehend what happened. It could be said that to Aelita, her mother did in fact "disappear", though the truth was probably the animators being artistic.

I'm not convinced, due mostly to a lack of evidence to support it, but I think I'll take a stab at some of Animenologist's questions in the hopes of getting some ideas and discussion out.

How and why would Hopper do that to his wife?
I've said this on another thread, but we are all assuming Franz Hopper was a good guy. With The Key being shown again, this subject is quite ambiguous. We see him as good because Aelita remembers him that way, and because she is good. She, however, knew nothing of his work or his plans ever. Not saying he is or isn't, but it's not clear. As far as how he would have done it, tech is not my thing. For all purposes, my answer will be magic.

Perhaps Hopper needed something extra to finish Xana. Xana may have been based on a multi-agent system, but it didn't work without a "cheat" of sorts. He would only need some of his wife's conciousness or sentience, and discarded others like memories and humanity.

Another possibility would involve the timeframe of Aelita's mother's disappearance. At that point in time, the virtualizers were not yet created, or only in their early stages. Franz Hopper may well have used his wife as a test subject and "lost" her that way. Whatever remained of her in the system may have been the cause of Xana's sentience.

Like I said, I'm just trying to give this theory a kick start, though I'm not really for it. Animenologist, please begin hacking away at my faulty logic and pseudo-techy-speak.

But yeah, though it's a wacky theory, Moonscoop could throw it at as - personally I have other theories about what happened to Mrs. Hopper - dark and sinister theories revolving around Project Carthage.
